  • Promoting a green hydrogen production project linked to solar power generation in Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do
  • Utilize 100% renewable energy and build production, storage, and transportation infrastructure of more than 0.6 tons per day
  • Agreement between 8 organizations/companies, including Gimcheon City, to create and revitalize the green hydrogen ecosystem

Samsung C&T Construction Division) will begin building a facility that produces green hydrogen using only new and renewable energy. Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced solely using renewable energy, and is the first in Korea to build a green hydrogen production facility.

Samsung C&T announced on the 30th that it plans to build a facility to produce green hydrogen, a clean energy source, by utilizing renewable energy through off-grid solar power generation in Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

* Off-grid: A method of directly producing energy without receiving energy such as electricity or gas from outside.

This project is a project to build infrastructure to produce, store, and transport 0.6 tons of green hydrogen per day by utilizing 100% renewable energy in connection with the Gimcheon Solar Power Plant located in Gimcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. We plan to complete construction of water electrolysis facilities by December 2024 and begin actual production in January 2025. The hydrogen produced is used as an eco-friendly fuel for fuel cell power generation in nearby areas, including hydrogen vehicle charging stations.

Samsung C&T oversees EPC, including basic design and detailed design for solar power generation, energy storage, green hydrogen production facilities, and the entire system linking them, as well as major equipment purchase and construction. In particular, we plan to participate in operations (O&M) and use the technology and data accumulated through this to promote large-scale green hydrogen projects at home and abroad in the future.

To create and revitalize the green hydrogen ecosystem, Samsung C&T signed a business agreement on the production and use of off-grid green hydrogen with Gimcheon City, energy-related organizations, public companies, and private companies at Gimcheon City Hall on the 30th.

Above all, in this business agreement, a large number of Korea’s representative energy-related public and private companies, including Gimcheon City, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Korea National Oil Corporation, Korea Electric Power Engineering & Technology, LS Electric, Hydrogen Energy Network, and S-Fuel Cell, will participate and consolidate their capabilities.

Jeong Ki-seok, executive director of the energy technology team at Samsung C&T, said, “This is a meaningful project that the public and private sectors have worked together to pursue, and it will become a cornerstone for the establishment of future energy self-sufficient cities and large-scale green hydrogen production overseas.”

Samsung C&T Construction Division has selected green hydrogen and ammonia as one of the pillars of its eco-friendly energy business and is pursuing green hydrogen and ammonia production projects in global markets such as Saudi Arabia, the Middle East, and Australia, while also storing green hydrogen and ammonia in Korea. We are participating in a project to build a hub terminal that provides supply.

In addition, the company is rapidly securing global capabilities across the green hydrogen value chain, including recently obtaining international certification for the design of the world’s largest liquefied hydrogen tank.
