Schneider Electric, a leader in digital energy management and automation, has teamed up with Iberdrola to enhance the process and energy control of its green hydrogen facilities, starting with the Puertollano plant. This collaboration marks a significant stride in promoting hydrogen as a sustainable energy resource in Europe.

Puertollano Plant: A Beacon of Green Hydrogen Production

The Puertollano facility, distinguished as Europe’s largest green hydrogen plant for industrial use, is at the forefront of this initiative. It boasts an impressive electrolysis-based green hydrogen production system, rated at 20 MW, powered entirely by renewable electricity sources.

Renewable Energy Integration

The plant’s operations are sustained by a dedicated 100 MW photovoltaic solar plant and supported by a 20 MWh lithium-ion battery system, ensuring a zero-emission production chain. This approach not only contributes to the decarbonization of sectors traditionally challenging to electrify but also upholds a commitment to a sustainable, emission-free value chain.

Advanced Control and Efficiency with Schneider Electric

To achieve optimal energy efficiency, Iberdrola has incorporated Schneider Electric’s cutting-edge solutions, including the DCS EcoStruxure Control Expert for Aveva System Platform. This innovative system allows seamless management of both the process control system and the electrical system on a single platform, enhancing plant performance, energy, and operational efficiency.

Operational Intelligence and Cybersecurity

The plant’s operational intelligence layer, based on the Aveva PI System, is instrumental in developing advanced data analytics solutions tailored to the evolving demands of the hydrogen sector. Additionally, the DCS system is designed with robust cybersecurity, meeting IEC62443 standards, and offers advanced redundancy solutions at both the hardware and software levels.

Pioneering the Future of Green Hydrogen Plants

This collaboration between Schneider Electric and Iberdrola is a critical step toward achieving our mutual goals of combating climate change and promoting energy independence using sustainable sources. The Puertollano project serves as a model for future green hydrogen plants, demonstrating our commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.

Olga García, VP of Industrial Automation at Schneider Electric Iberia, remarks, “Our partnership with Iberdrola is pivotal in our joint effort to combat climate change and foster energy independence. The Puertollano plant is a strategic endeavor in promoting hydrogen in Spain and aiding the decarbonization of challenging sectors. We are honored to support our client on this journey towards sustainable energy.”
