Fuel Cells Works, Shell Is Sailing Through Rotterdam on Hydrogen With a Water Taxi

Chantal Zeegers, alderman for climate, building and living in Rotterdam, has christened the world’s first water taxi that runs on hydrogen at the Wilhelminakade in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The SWIM consortium, consisting of partners Enviu, Zepp.solutions, Flying Fish and Watertaxi Rotterdam, has worked on an innovative hydrogen powertrain for maritime applications. At the beginning of 2023, this clean water taxi will be entered into the fleet of Watertaxi Rotterdam.

Shell is a sponsor of the demonstration period that will take place in 2022 and contributes to the launch of the water taxi and the first test runs by making green hydrogen available from the test installation at the Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam (ETCA).

Yuri Sebregts, Chief Technology Officer at Shell, said:

Shell believes that hydrogen plays a major role in making sectors that are difficult to electrify more sustainable, such as inland shipping.

“Cooperation between different parties is needed to accelerate the development of the hydrogen economy. That is why Shell supports initiatives for the use of hydrogen as a transport fuel, such as the entrepreneurs and experts of the SWIM consortium.”
