Using the gas grid to transport hydrogen is one of a number of potential approaches to addressing the heat decarbonisation challenge over the long-term. BEIS commissioned Frazer-Nash to explore the logistical challenges associated with transitioning UK domestic properties from natural gas to hydrogen.
This study sought to answer a series of questions raised by BEIS on the following topics:
- practical tasks required to transition homes from natural gas to hydrogen
- how these tasks could be delivered
- the associated risks, barriers and opportunities
The investigation was in 3 stages:
an initial benchmarking exercise to understand the logistics of delivering existing natural gas to domestic appliances, the technical challenges associated with hydrogen and evidence from previous conversions
engagement with stakeholders comprising 1-2-1 interviews and a workshop with domestic gas installation and servicing organisations, gas regulatory and servicing bodies, appliance manufacturers, academics and consultancies
a review and appraisal of the evidence
The report aims to improve the evidence base on hydrogen as an option for decarbonising heat. There is currently no consensus on the best approach to addressing the heat decarbonisation challenge over the long-term.
