UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have launched a new phase in their energy cooperation with a focus on renewable energy, notably initiating a feasibility study on hydrogen exports from the UK to Germany.

This study marks a pivotal element of the newly established UK-Germany Hydrogen Partnership, formalized through the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDoI) between the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). This partnership is a testament to both nations’ commitment to leading global hydrogen initiatives, enhancing trade, and boosting investments in the hydrogen sector.

The feasibility study aims to scrutinize the potential for hydrogen exports from the UK to Germany, evaluating necessary infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, and logistical requirements to support such initiatives. This collaborative effort between the two ministries underscores the strategic importance of joint endeavors in propelling the hydrogen economy forward and achieving shared net-zero goals.

The implications of this study are far-reaching for both nations’ hydrogen markets. By facilitating hydrogen exports, the partnership seeks to accelerate industrial decarbonization, enhance business collaborations, and cultivate a robust regional hydrogen market, all while advancing the sustainable energy transition and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
