The European-American car company Stellantis plans to significantly expand its production capacity for commercial vehicles with hydrogen fuel cells. Jean-Michel Billig, head of the group’s hydrogen program, said this in an interview with WELT AM SONNTAG.

“This year we are starting production of larger vehicles in Poland, and development in North America should follow quickly – especially with the large RAM 5500 in a fuel cell version,” says Billig. The new variant of the RAM 5500 pick-up truck is to be manufactured in Mexico .

Overall, the group wants to expand manufacturing capacity for fuel cell vehicles to 100,000 units per year by 2030. “In the next decade we expect a significant market share for this technology; for commercial vehicles it could be up to 40 percent,” said Billig.

Stellantis has been offering medium-sized commercial vehicles with fuel cells since the end of 2022. According to Billig, 350 of these have been sold so far. Series production is now starting. “Hydrogen will be an essential part of CO 2 -free mobility in the future,” said Billig. “We want to offer a completely decarbonized product range in Europe from 2030. We also need this technology for this.”

The group sees batteries and fuel cells as technologies that complement each other. There will be a need for both, they cover different use cases.
