This week’s Flashback Friday brings us back to an exciting development in green aviation. In late June of 2023, Dovetail Electric Aviation, a pioneer in this field, partnered with Hyundai Motor Group’s HTWO brand. Their joint goal is to integrate a hydrogen fuel cell system into Dovetail’s electric aviation powertrain in preparation for upcoming testing.

New South WalesDovetail Electric Aviation, an innovative player in the green aviation sector, has disclosed its collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group’s HTWO brand, aiming to incorporate a hydrogen fuel cell system into its electric aviation powertrain for upcoming trials.

HTWO, a prominent brand within the Hyundai Motor Group, is renowned for its fuel cell system-based hydrogen operations, thereby making it an ideal partner for Dovetail’s endeavors.

Rex, Australia’s premier independent regional and domestic airline, which acquired a 20% stake in Dovetail back in April, has been diligently collaborating with Dovetail. The shared objective is to expedite the transition of turbine-powered aircraft to zero-emission electric propulsion, thereby aligning with the global momentum towards green aviation.

For its preliminary testing in Australia, Dovetail will employ HTWO’s hydrogen fuel cell system. This system is set to be integrated with Dovetail’s successful “Iron Bird” – a system that encompasses a +250kW aviation electric motor coupled with the necessary power electronics and controls.

The integration of HTWO’s fuel cell system will precede the full-scale trials and potentially lead to a groundbreaking first flight as early as next year.

This strategic partnership enables Dovetail Electric Aviation to further refine its electric propulsion system, integrating the power of hydrogen to extend its potential use cases and value for future operators. As such, it marks a significant step forward in the journey towards hydrogen-powered aviation, solidifying Dovetail’s pioneering role in this exciting field.
