Toyota unveiled the first version of its hydrogen prototype, the GR H2 Racing Concept, at the 24 Hours of Le Mans Centenary this past June.
Developed for competition, the prototype was presented subsequent to an announcement by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) revealing its intention to allow hydrogen engine cars to race by 2027.
Toyota has used a hydrogen-powered Corolla entered in the Super Taikyu series since 2021 to perfect its technology within the demanding framework of competition. The car also participated in the 2022 Idemitsu 1500 Super Endurance at the Chang International Circuit in Thailand. The Japanese marque has ramped up efforts toward the production, transportation and utilisation of hydrogen to achieved a carbon-neutral world.
Toyota is eager to use the unvaluable technological laboratory that is the 24 Hours of Le Mans to hold its own against the next generation of competitors.
