Among the first to receive a Certificate of Guaranteed Origin from CertifHy; renewable hydrogen will supply service stations dedicated to vehicle refueling

Paris — Air Products, the world leader in the supply of hydrogen, has unveiled a pilot project to create the first Certificate of Origin Guarantee (GO) in Europe for hydrogen, renewable, sustainable, produced in the Netherlands, following the CertifHy program.

These certificates were solicited for the hydrogen produced in Rotterdam in the chloro-alkaline electrolysis plants of Nouryon (formerly AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals), which use wind energy in their energy pack. This renewable electricity comes from the newly commissioned Krammer and Bouwdokken wind farms in the Netherlands. Once produced, hydrogen is conditioned by Air Products before being sent to the Rotterdam pipeline for commercialization.

Two of Air Products’ hydrogen customers in the transportation sector will receive their Guaranteed Certificate of Origin for Renewable Hydrogen as part of this pilot project. The first is H2 MOBILITY Deutschland, an organization operating a network of hydrogen filling stations in Germany. The second is London’s transport authority – Transport For London – which runs the hydrogen buses crisscrossing the UK’s capital.

The project is part of CertifHy, an initiative to launch the first Guaranteed Low Carbon and Renewable Hydrogen Certification Scheme on a European scale. Transferable across the continent, these certificates aim to create an innovative and transparent hydrogen market. Air Products, the world’s leading supplier of hydrogen to refineries for the production of cleaner combustion fuel for transportation, has extensive experience in the hydrogen fuel industry.

Kurt Lefevere, Vice President Northern Continent of Air Products said: “If we really want to help promote clean and environmentally friendly transport systems, it is crucial that all players in the chain of supply unite their efforts. We are constantly looking for greater operational efficiency and opportunities to contribute in the most cost-effective way to the CO2 reduction targets set by the European Union countries. Having a European Certificate of Origin guarantee system for renewable hydrogen will help us and our project with Nouryon is an innovative example of how we can achieve this when the circumstances are right. “.

Marcel Galjee, Energy Director at Nouryon, commented: “CertifHy’s” Green Hydrogen “can play an important role in transportation and is also a key element in the transition to an environmentally friendly chemical industry, where it is used extensively as a raw material. This CE certification is a significant first step towards the future development of a green hydrogen market and provides the foundation for the industry to play a leading role in this transition. ”

Nikolas Iwan, CEO of H2 MOBILITY Deutschland concludes: “Air Products CertifHy Green Hydrogen Certificates will significantly increase the proportion of green hydrogen in our stations. We firmly believe that CertifHy will help us build an innovative and transparent European market for renewable hydrogen. ”

The CertifHy pilot program will initially run until mid-2019. It is funded by Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCHJU), a partnership between the European Commission, the hydrogen industry and the scientific community.
