Arnhems Eusebius Church Heated with Green Hydrogen Main

Large monumental buildings such as the Eusebiuskerk in Arnhem have an enormous energy requirement and can be insulated to a limited extent.

Part of the heat demand is currently being filled with floor heating from a local heat network. Extra energy demand is supplemented with natural gas-fired radiant panels for peak heating. This can be replaced by hydrogen from local sustainable sources.

The Eusebius Foundation wants to be the most sustainable church in the world and dares to take on this challenge together with the parties HyMatters, the Hogeschool van Arnhem and Nijmegen, DEKRA, Stichting Eusebius Arnhem and the municipality of Arnhem.

Heating a monumental church building with sustainably produced hydrogen

In this ambitious goal, the parties HyMatters, the Hogeschool van Arnhem and Nijmegen, DEKRA, Stichting Eusebius Arnhem and the municipality of Arnhem have come together. The use of hydrogen from a sustainable source for heating a monumental church has never been done before. Nevertheless, this offers an opportunity to reduce the natural gas consumption of monuments.

Large monumental buildings such as the Eusebiuskerk have an enormous energy requirement and can be insulated to a limited extent. The Eusebiuskerk solves this by filling in part of the heat demand with floor heating fed from a local heat network. But underfloor heating only provides slow convection heat and that is not enough to make the building comfortable and fast, for example during events. Until now this has been solved with natural gas-fired radiant panels for extra peak heating. The innovative project focuses on radiation panels and associated infrastructure to use hydrogen from local sustainable sources for peak heating.

The Eusebius Foundation wants to be the most sustainable church in the world and dares to take on this challenge. The feasibility is investigated in the first phase of this project. Expertise in the field of energy issues, hydrogen technology, safety and monumental buildings is available within the project team. The project provides a design for the hydrogen installation with associated infrastructure and a realization plan.
