The Council of Ministers approves the federal hydrogen vision and strategy on a proposal from Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten.
The energy transition requires a fundamental change in how we produce and consume our energy. In this regard, the energy carriers used (electricity, hydrogen, gas, oil and their derivatives, etc.) will have to evolve in order to enable us to achieve our climate goals. Hydrogen seems particularly suitable for decarbonising energy-intensive industry and heavy transport and shipping. The government has many ambitions for Belgium with regard to the development of the hydrogen market and associated technologies. To achieve this, we must have a clear vision and strategy that guide hydrogen policy. That is why a document was drawn up in which the very first federal vision and strategy was elaborated.
The federal hydrogen strategy aims to prepare Belgium as well as possible for the climate challenges, in addition to the technological and economic challenges of the coming decades. This strategy is part of the European hydrogen strategy and is based on four pillars:
- position itself as an import and transit hub of renewable molecules in Europe
- to perpetuate our leadership in hydrogen technologies
- organize a robust hydrogen market
- focus on collaboration
The Council of Ministers instructs the Minister of Energy to share this document with the regions and to develop a more joint and coherent policy framework on hydrogen in consultation with the regions.
