Bulgartransgaz launches survey for hydrogen transmission demand

Bulgaria’s public gas transmission operator Bulgartransgaz said on Thursday that it has launched a non-binding survey to assess the market demand for hydrogen transmission capacity.

In collaboration with neighbouring operators, the survey aims to gauge the expected demand for hydrogen transmission capacity and identify market interest in hydrogen’s potential role within the future energy mix, Bulgartransgaz said in a press release.

The results will facilitate the planning and establishment of necessary hydrogen transmission infrastructure to and through Bulgaria, pinpointing potential production sites in the country and end-user exit points.

In line with EU decarbonisation policies, Bulgartransgaz is developing its infrastructure to integrate hydrogen into the energy landscape, it said. The company’s planned projects include the construction of infrastructure for pure hydrogen transmission and adapting existing gas facilities for hydrogen-gas blends containing up to 10% hydrogen.

The deadline to submit information in the survey is September 15.

Bulgartransgaz is part of the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance and European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) initiatives.

In April, the company said it is in the early stages of developing a project for a new hydrogen infrastructure, which would require an estimated near-term total investment of 860 million euro ($938.8 million) and would be part of a future hydrogen corridor from Southeast to Central Europe.

Earlier this month, Romania’s natural gas transmission company Transgaz [BSE:TGN] launched a non-binding market demand assessment process to gauge the potential for hydrogen transmission capacity in the country.
