  • Canada and France Forge New Partnership to Advance Green Hydrogen and Clean Energy Research

In a historic move to strengthen bilateral relations and push forward the global clean energy agenda, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal have signed a comprehensive agreement focusing on the development and application of green hydrogen. This collaboration is set against the backdrop of both nations’ commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainable development, and innovation, emphasizing their shared values and robust diplomatic ties.

“We underscore the signing of a memorandum of understanding to create the Franco-Canadian International Research Network (IRN) on hydrogen, coordinated by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and involving 10 universities from both our countries. This initiative aims to deepen collaborative efforts between Canadian and French researchers to improve low-carbon-emission hydrogen production technologies.”

Extensive Cooperation Across Multiple Sectors

The agreement, which was signed amidst discussions that covered a broad spectrum of mutual interests—from international security to environmental protection—includes significant commitments in transportation and energy. Both nations have pledged to decarbonize crucial sectors such as aviation, maritime activities, and railways, further integrating green practices into their economic and developmental agendas.

In line with their ongoing contributions to global coal transition initiatives, such as the Powering Past Coal Alliance and the Coal Transition Accelerator, Canada and France will extend their cooperation within these frameworks. The leaders of both nations emphasized the need for transparency and collaborative competition on the journey towards achieving climate neutrality.

Innovative Research and Technological Development

A pivotal element of the new agreement is the emphasis on joint research and innovation. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed to establish the Franco-Canadian International Research Network (IRN) on hydrogen. Coordinated by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and involving ten universities from both countries, this network aims to spearhead advancements in low-carbon hydrogen production technologies.
