Colombian utility company, EPM, is making strides in advancing the nation’s energy transition through the launch of an operational pilot project aimed at exploring technologies for green hydrogen production and use.

Located at the Aguas Claras Wastewater Treatment Plant (PTAR) in Bello, Valle de Aburrá region, the pilot leverages biogas produced at the plant, which is operated by Aguas Nacionales, a Grupo EPM subsidiary. The key goal of this initiative is to gather data on the cost, effectiveness, performance, and potential uses of hydrogen technology, aligning with the National Government’s Energy Transition process.

Jorge Andrés Carrillo Cardoso, EPM’s general manager, announced the firm’s commitment to creating a Green Hydrogen Business Plan, noting their active involvement in the Aguas Claras WWTP pilot. EPM is also seeking partnerships to enhance its competencies in the green hydrogen sphere.

With the vision to become a major player in the burgeoning hydrogen industry, EPM is probing market trends and investigating business models for green hydrogen production and sale. Hydrogen is hailed as a highly adaptable energy medium, though its extraction and separation from sources like water, hydrocarbons, or biomass necessitate advanced technological methods.

Green hydrogen, increasingly recognized as a pivotal tool in combatting the climate crisis driven by CO2 emissions, boasts advantages such as being CO2-free, multifaceted in use, and efficient to store and transport.

Rich in clean energy sources such as wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal power, Colombia is ideally positioned to utilize these assets for green hydrogen production, both for local consumption and export. The Colombian government, acknowledging the benefits and wide-ranging industrial uses of hydrogen, is prioritizing it in the nation’s decarbonization plans and overall energy framework.

EPM’s pilot initiative symbolizes a significant move towards tapping into Colombia’s potential in the green hydrogen sector. By scrutinizing the potential and viability of hydrogen technology, EPM intends to aid the nation’s energy shift, encourage sustainable growth, and establish itself as a key stakeholder in the emergent hydrogen economy.
