Doosan Energy Signs IRT to Power Plants Transition in Indonesia to Green Ammonia and Hydrogen e1694435984288

The Java 9 and 10 Ultra-Selective Catalytic Reduction (USCR) power plant is setting a global precedent as the first-ever hybrid power facility to integrate green ammonia and green hydrogen into its operational blueprint. This groundbreaking initiative has been set in motion through a key Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) inked between PT Indo Raya Tenaga (IRT), the plant’s owner and operator, and Doosan Energy at the ASEAN Business Roundtable Meeting, a summit that drew governmental figures from Indonesia and South Korea.

“The core tenet behind adopting green ammonia is due to Java 9 and 10 being the singular power plant in Indonesia employing SCR technology,” said Peter Wijaya, President Director of IRT. Wijaya further explained that the plant’s unique SCR technology enables it to operate as a hybrid, capable of drawing up to 60% of its energy from ammonia fuel sources. “We’ve conducted an in-depth review with PLN Engineering, and the results are promising.”

As outlined in the MoU, the partners are set to craft a holistic roadmap and supply chain strategy for green ammonia in Indonesia. This is a considerable leap given that there are currently no power plants in Indonesia using green ammonia or green hydrogen at a commercial scale. Yet, rigorous evaluations from IRT, corroborated by South Korean partners, have confirmed that the plant’s boilers can effectively run on these green fuels, contributing to as much as 60% of the energy required for electrical output.

Doosan Energy CEO Jeong Yeon-in said, “Doosan Energy’s various carbon-neutral solutions, such as ammonia co-firing, hydrogen turbines, and liquefied hydrogen plants, will be effective alternatives to Indonesia’s carbon reduction goals,” adding, “Starting with this agreement, “We also look forward to active exchanges on carbon reduction power generation projects.”

This groundbreaking venture follows a previous accord between IRT and PLN Engineering to maximize the use of green ammonia as a fuel source, formalized during the Group of 20 Summit in Bali in 2022.

With zero carbon emissions from production to utilization, green ammonia and hydrogen are increasingly recognized as the linchpins in the global energy transformation. With this latest move, the Java 9 and 10 power plant is not only broadening its hybrid capabilities but also catalyzing the development of green ammonia and hydrogen markets in Indonesia.
