Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa Assumes Chairmanship of Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance

Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, South Africa’s Minister in the Presidency for Electricity, has taken the helm of the Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance (AGHA), an announcement made during his recent working visit to Nairobi, Kenya. The occasion coincided with the Inaugural Africa Climate Summit, held from September 4th to 6th.

Green hydrogen, an emerging linchpin in large-scale renewable energy production, is earmarked as a crucial element in South Africa’s future energy plans. The compound offers the promise of bolstering energy transmission infrastructures, increasing renewable generation capacity, and contributing to local renewable energy development.

Inaugurated in May 2022, AGHA was founded by six African nations including Egypt, Kenya, Mauritania, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa. The alliance aims to expedite the growth of green hydrogen projects in Africa, facilitating the decarbonization of the continent. Its focus encompasses regulatory policies, capacity building, financial structuring, and certification requirements for domestic and export markets.

The inclusion of Ethiopia and Angola in AGHA was also announced in tandem with Ramokgopa’s new chairmanship.

“Taking up the chairmanship allows us an opportunity to amplify the green hydrogen agenda across Africa,” Ramokgopa said. He pledged to leverage the role to encourage peer-to-peer learning, foster technology transfers, and stimulate economic growth and job creation.
