EDF Renewables and Ceara Government Form Green Hydrogen Partnership e1692367364406

In a groundbreaking move signaling the strengthening of Brazil’s renewable energy front, EDF Renewables Brazil and the Ceará government have solidified their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This substantial agreement focuses on advancing the green hydrogen industry, an essential component of a sustainable future.

This partnership intends to spark the green hydrogen production chain, supporting innovative and sustainable energy solutions. EDF Renewables’ global mission embraces this renewable resource, planning the installation of 3 GW of electrolyzers worldwide by 2030. This commitment highlights a clear path towards an environmentally responsible future.

With the MoU, EDF Renewables Brazil is exploring in-depth studies, evaluations, and the potential establishment of a green hydrogen production facility. Local universities may play a crucial role, providing the innovation and knowledge required to foster this emerging energy sector.

Ceará, already a leader in green hydrogen integration, has secured 32 memoranda of understanding with various stakeholders interested in contributing to the green hydrogen hub at the Port of Pecém. A significant investment potential of $29.7 billion reflects a rapidly growing enthusiasm for renewable energy projects.

The Port of Pecém stands as a cornerstone in the green hydrogen sector, with a primary focus on electrolysis-based production. This revolutionary method utilizes renewable electricity to extract hydrogen molecules from water, integrating offshore wind technology in selected projects.

EDF’s MoU with Ceará marks its second initiative in Brazil specifically concerning green hydrogen. A prior agreement with the Rio Grande do Norte government in May underscored collaboration on both offshore wind energy generation and green hydrogen production within the region.

The offshore wind complex along Rio Grande do Norte’s coastline, projected to yield up to 2 GW of capacity, epitomizes this strategic approach, with operations commencing in 2030.

Globally, EDF Renewables has amassed a portfolio of over 1 GW in operation, with an additional 10 GW in various stages of development, concentrating on offshore wind projects.

With 1.7 GW of onshore and solar wind generation in Brazil, including projects both operational and in progress, EDF Renewables is shifting focus towards hybrid projects. These pioneering initiatives uniquely blend offshore wind power and green hydrogen production within Brazil’s energy framework.

Regulatory challenges still persist, and Vice President of EDF Renewables Brazil, Raíssa Cafure Lafranque, revealed, “the company has been diligently preparing for entry into Brazil’s offshore wind market since 2021.” The regulatory landscape for offshore wind and green hydrogen needs clear, well-defined local and international guidelines.

While waiting for regulatory clarity, EDF Renewables Brazil remains poised to embark on cutting-edge projects that will shape Brazil’s energy transition. This commitment to advancing clean hydrogen technologies underscores their dedication to crafting a resilient and sustainable future.
