Electric Cars Are Numbered

A fact is pointing to changing the future of electric cars in Spain and the rest of the world, after several years in which these seemed to be imposing their law for the coming years, even being openly demanded by political authorities. Hydrogen as a fuel system is gaining ground, and the successful demonstration by Westport Fuel Systems in Madrid could mark a turning point in the future of automobiles.

Hydrogen has long been considered a potential solution to the energy crisis we are experiencing today, and the transportation sector has added this element to its catalog of fuels to the point that it could be the one that provides the greatest resolution for the future. In Spain, we have already been able to see what hydrogen’s response is to all the guidelines demanded by the automotive logistics industry.

As a renewable energy source with zero carbon emissions that does not produce greenhouse gasses at the time of its use, hydrogen has become fashionable within automotive technology, although after facing several economic and technical challenges, it also has its drawbacks, hindering large-scale implementation.

The company Westport Fuel Systems, specialized in the manufacturing of hydrogen fuel systems and combustion technologies, has tried to develop a technical solution to convince of the accessibility and greater economic viability of this energy source technology. Through a demonstration carried out in Madrid in collaboration with Alsa Group, we were able to see the capacity through this company to develop a hydrogen fuel system that is profitable and efficient.

The Jibaro series, by Alsa, was the vehicle in which this hydrogen fuel system was installed, which uses green hydrogen produced through renewable energy. The bus was able to cover the same distance that would have been covered with a traditional diesel vehicle of the same dimensions, and without the need for recharging. This translates into greater efficiency and less pollution, making it less harmful to the environment.

Electric cars vs. hydrogen system

Reducing the carbon footprint in Spain to achieve the climate targets aspired by the European Union is a goal of the country. Therefore, this hydrogen system can mark a before and after that would directly impact electric cars, after a significant boom in past years that has continued with a consistent progression today, although not meteoric.

If we compare it with the technology proposed by Westport, we can see that the latter is more flexible than other fuel systems, including hydrogen ones, as it is compatible with different types and concentrations of hydrogen, such as blue hydrogen produced through natural gas or green hydrogen from renewable sources such as solar energy or wind energy.
