EnergyAustralia today confirmed construction of its Tallawarra B gas/hydrogen power project in New South Wales is on track to be commissioned ahead of the summer of 2023-24 following the completion of agreements this week involving EA, Webuild, GE and Deloitte – the administrators of Clough Limited.

The Tallawarra B project is an important part of EnergyAustralia’s aim to lead and accelerate the clean energy transformation by providing Australia’s first peaking power station to be powered by a blend of gas and green hydrogen with direct carbon emissions offset. As part of this EnergyAustralia is working with the Illawarra Hydrogen Hub, to support the development of a green hydrogen industry in the region.

EnergyAustralia Head of Projects, Tim Walshe said: “It’s been a challenging two months since Clough Limited went into administration.  To have come out the other side with 200 people currently working on site and the project remaining on schedule speaks volumes about the level of trust and productivity that’s underpinned the continuation over the past two months.”

“This is a great outcome for Tallawarra B, the energy transition in New South Wales, and all the people involved with the project.  Importantly, remaining on schedule ensures Tallawarra B will be on line supporting peak summer demand following the scheduled retirement of the Liddell coal-fired power station.”

“In particular, we want to acknowledge the professionalism of the management team at GE, the senior management and onsite team at Clough, Deloitte, our many suppliers and on-site contractors who remained with us, and the support of the New South Wales Government.”

“This allowed us to continue to move ahead with Tallawarra B’s construction, which already includes installation of the gas turbine and generator and the construction team on site continuing to grow to as many as 220 people in the coming weeks”.

“We appreciate everyone’s hard work and cooperation and look forward to AEMO’s support to register the plant and working with network service providers Endeavour Energy and Transgrid to bring Tallawarra B online over the next 9 months,” Mr Walshe said.

The Tallawarra B project will deliver a fast-start open cycle power station, which in peak periods will deliver reliable power to an additional 150,000 New South Wales homes and play a vital role in maintaining system security, complementing renewables coming into the system.
