EU Commission Approves Joint Venture for Japanese Liquefied Hydrogen Supply Chain

The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the creation of a joint venture by INPEX Corporation, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (‘Kawasaki’) and Iwatani Corporation, all of Japan.

The transaction relates primarily to the liquefaction of hydrogen in Australia and its transport to Japan.

The Commission concluded that the notified transaction would not raise competition concerns, given the limited impact on the European Economic Area. The notified transaction was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

In October 2023, Inpex agreed to buy shares in Japan Suiso Energy, a joint venture between Kawasaki and Iwatani.
