A new alliance, named H2eart for Europe, has been formed by eleven leading storage system operators from seven European Union countries. This initiative, launched in Brussels, Belgium, is dedicated to promoting underground hydrogen storage (UHS) across Europe, marking a significant step towards achieving the EU’s climate goals.

H2eart for Europe is a high-level, CEO-led alliance that champions a unified vision for the future of decarbonized energy systems in the EU. It emphasizes the critical role of underground hydrogen storage in meeting the EU’s climate targets. The alliance includes prominent members such as RAG Austria, Nafta, OMG, Gasunie, HGS, Teréga, Snam, Uniper, VNG, Storengy, and RWE.

The launch event, held on January 23, saw H2Europe CEO Jorgo Chatzimarkakis engage in a panel discussion, highlighting the strategic role of UHS in the EU. H2Europe has expressed strong support for H2eart for Europe’s objectives, especially its ambitious target of achieving 45 TWh of underground hydrogen storage by 2030.

The alliance is committed to three key goals:

  1. Establishing a binding European UHS target.
  2. Developing a comprehensive strategy for storage across Europe.
  3. Adopting a systemic approach to planning energy storage and flexibility within the EU.

H2eart for Europe’s mission is to accelerate underground hydrogen storage projects, integral to the decarbonization efforts of the European Union. The alliance is dedicated to providing the necessary storage infrastructure to meet the objectives of REPowerEU and other climate initiatives by 2030 and beyond.

With a firm belief in hydrogen’s vital role in the EU’s energy transition and the necessity of robust storage infrastructure, H2eart for Europe is poised to lead the expansion of UHS projects and attract critical investments for the growth of this essential sector.
