Fidelis New Energy praises the selection of ARCH2 as one of the national hydrogen hubs

HOUSTONĀ — Fidelis New Energy, a global leader in independent carbon management infrastructure focused on hard-to-extract industries and biogenic CO2, welcomes the selection of the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) as one of seven clean hydrogen hubs recognized by the U.S. government under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The hub is expected to receive up to $925 million in federal funding, matched with up to $6 billion in private investment, and will create up to 20,000 jobs.

Fidelis is one of the key players in the ARCH2 hub and is developing several projects in West Virginia focused on the production and consumption of clean hydrogen. First, the Mountaineer GigaSystemā„¢, a net-zero carbon hydrogen project consisting of four phases, with each phase expected to exceed 500 metric tons per day (“MTPD”) at an estimated capital cost of $2 billion per phase. Fidelis is also using its own H2PowerCool technologies to create the Monarch Cloud Campus, a data center complex powered by clean hydrogen from Mountaineer. Finally, the company will use its CO2PowerGrow technologies to create industrial greenhouses using CO2 emissions and waste heat from Monarch and to support Mountaineer.

Bengt Jarlsjo, co-founder, president and COO of Fidelis, said: ā€œThe collaboration, commitment and investments of the members and stakeholders of the ARCH2 consortium, led by Batelle, have created a compelling concept for a regional hydrogen center with direct benefits for West Virginia , the Appalachians and the United States submitted. I am delighted that the Department of Energy has recognized the benefits of ARCH2 and its ability to deliver a practical, rapid and efficient commercial launch of a hydrogen hub and associated jobs for the region’s energy transition.”

ā€œWe are pleased to have entered into a carbon sequestration operating agreement with the state of West Virginia, providing unique access to pore space and making West Virginia a leader in CCS. As one of the largest hydrogen producers in the ARCH2 Hub, we hope to continue our partnership with the state and help ensure the Appalachia region takes a leadership role in the hydrogen economy,” said Pete Hollis, Senior Vice President and Global Head of CCUS at Fidelis.

Dan Shapiro , CEO and co-founder of Fidelis, added: ā€œFidelis is very grateful to everyone involved who made this possible. This includes Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito for their support of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which made the hydrogen hub possible. Additionally, as author and supporter of the Inflation Reduction Act ( IRA), Senator Manchin was critical to providing legal certainty that ensures the economic viability of clean hydrogen projects. We would also like to thank our advisory board member Maj. Gen. James “Jim” Hoyer, Governor Jim Justice and his administration, the West Virginia Economic Development Authority and Mason County Economic Development for helping to make Mason County , West Virginia , home the Mountaineer GigaSystem and the Monarch Cloud Campus.”
