Fuel Cells Works, France's Air Liquide Secures a Contract for Low-Carbon Hydrogen and Ammonia Production Technology in Japan

Air Liquide, through its subsidiary Air Liquide Engineering & Construction, is leveraging its innovative technology portfolio to support the decarbonization efforts of its industrial customers. One of the latest technologies being utilized is Autothermal Reforming (ATR), which allows for the efficient production of large scale, low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia when combined with carbon capture technology.

Air Liquide, as one of the leading companies in the field of ATR, has been selected to provide its technology for Japan’s first demonstration project for low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production, owned and operated by INPEX CORPORATION.

While other options such as Steam Methane Reforming with carbon capture exist in the market, ATR is a particularly suitable option for larger scale low-carbon hydrogen production facilities. By combining ATR with carbon capture technology, customers can achieve higher energy efficiency, lower investment costs, and a simplified single train production process that facilitates carbon capture of up to 99%.

Air Liquide, with its proprietary technologies in the ATR process, is uniquely positioned to provide large scale syngas production applications.

Air Liquide Engineering & Construction will now provide its ATR technology to INPEX CORPORATION’s pilot project, the Kashiwazaki Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia Project, located in the Hirai area of Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. This project will be Japan’s first demonstration of integrating low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production with carbon capture technology. Air Liquide’s ATR technology will play a crucial role in the achievement of this milestone.
