Nikola Corporation (Nasdaq: NKLA), a global leader in zero-emission transportation, power and infrastructure solutions, and IVECO, a brand of Iveco Group (MI: IVG), which designs, manufactures and sells heavy, medium and light commercial vehicles, together with GP JOULE , an integrated energy supplier in all areas of the energy value chain based in Reußenköge, Germany, announced a letter of intent to order 100 Nikola Tre class 8 hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV) semi-trailer trucks .

The Nikola Tre FCEV in the European 6×2 variant rolls off the assembly line in the Ulm production plant of the joint venture between Nikola and the Iveco Group.

THE FIRST 30 OF THE 100 NIKOLA TRE FCEV SEMITRAILER TRACTORS ARE EXPECTED TO BE DELIVERED TO GP JOULE in 2024 . The remaining 70 vehicles will be delivered in 2025. GP JOULE is keeping the option open of purchasing the second batch via GATE – Green & Advanced Transport Ecosystem, IVECO’s all-inclusive rental model for electric trucks. The IVECO service and workshop network provides the essential maintenance and service work for these locally emission-free vehicles. GP JOULEwill make the 100 Nikola Tre FCEV tractor units available to its transport and logistics customers. The order is subject to a successful application for KsNI funding, the German funding program based on the “Guideline for the funding of light and heavy commercial vehicles with alternative, climate-friendly drives and the associated tank and charging infrastructure for electrically operated commercial vehicles” of the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility.

In addition, it was agreed in the letter of intent that from 2026 GP JOULE would market further semitrailer tractors with hydrogen fuel cell drives to customers in Europe and supply GP JOULE filling stations with 100 percent green hydrogen.

Michael Lohscheller, President and CEO of Nikola Corporation, says: “The order from GP JOULE is an example of how the Nikola Tre FCEV can support commercial customers in Germany in the transition to locally emission-free commercial vehicles several years before the other manufacturers in order to to achieve the goal of decarbonizing road freight transport.”

André Steinau, Managing Director of GP JOULE HYDROGEN GmbH, explains: “100 percent renewable energy for everyone, that is what drives us. Together with Nikola and IVECO, we offer our customers all components for climate-neutral heavy-duty traffic from a single source: from the production and purchase of green hydrogen to hydrogen filling stations, right through to needs-based fuel cell semi-trailers and service. This is the easy way to get started with locally emission-free road transport.”

Simone Olivati, President Financial Services of the Iveco Group, comments: “We are very pleased that GP JOULE has chosen the Nikola Tre FECV and with this agreement we can offer customers in Germany hydrogen mobility and decarbonization thanks to our innovative GATE rental model of road freight transport. GATE is dedicated to meeting the needs of battery and hydrogen fuel cell electric utility vehicle customers, initially serving the IVECO and Nikola brands. This is an opportunity to offer our comprehensive service based on a pay-per-use formula, giving customers access to the powertrain of tomorrow.”
