Future Proof Shippings Second Vessel Conversion to Hydrogen Power

Future Proof Shipping (FPS) has commenced the conversion of its second inland container vessel, FPS Waal, to run on hydrogen. This innovative project underscores the accelerating momentum towards hydrogen as a renewable energy source for zero-emissions maritime transport.

The Conversion: Building Upon Success

The FPS Waal has arrived at Holland Shipyards Group’s yard in Werkendam, the Netherlands, marking the initiation of its conversion to a hydrogen-powered vessel. This builds upon the success of FPS’s previously converted vessel, FPS Maas—now known as H2 Barge 1.

Technical Details: A Fully Zero-Emissions Propulsion System

The conversion process involves the removal of all internal combustion engines and the installation of a fully zero-emissions propulsion system. This includes Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells, hydrogen storage, battery packs, and an electric drive train. Over the coming weeks, the main engine and generators will be removed, and Ballard Power Systems fuel cell section and battery room will be installed in the cargo hold.

Support and Funding: Collaborating Towards a Sustainable Future

The project has attracted support from leading organizations including the Port of Rotterdam, Expertise- en InnovatieCentrum Binnenvaart (EICB), Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs), WaterborneTP, NSHyMap, RH2INE, and NCE Maritime CleanTech.

Funding has been made possible through the Interreg North Sea Region Programme (Zero Emission Ports North Sea – ZEM Ports NS), Flagships H2020 Project (Clean Hydrogen Partnership), and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).

Success Story: The Trailblazing H2 Barge 1

future proof shipping launches first hydrogenpowered inland container ship

The first hydrogen-powered vessel, H2 Barge 1, has been successfully operating between the Port of Rotterdam and the BCTN terminal in Meerhout, Belgium, since May. It is on charter to BCTN, who operates it on behalf of Nike EMEA.

Future Proof Shipping’s Vision: Ten Zero-Emissions Ships in Five Years

Ambitiously aiming to have ten zero-emissions ship projects initiated within the next five years, Future Proof Shipping is positioning itself as a leader in the transition to hydrogen-powered maritime transport.
