The H2 MOBILITY Germany hydrogen station at the Shell filling station in Düren in the Great Valley was put into normal operation today in the presence of District Administrator Wolfgang Spelthahn. This ends the six-month optimization operation, during which final work is still being carried out in the background.

At the H2 filling station, five Rurtalbus hydrogen buses are already refueling at 350 bar and various cars and light commercial vehicles at 700 bar, including five vehicles from the Düren district. The Düren hydrogen station is conveniently located on the A4 motorway and closes the supply gap between Cologne and Aachen.

Hydrogen is used to refuel electric vehicles with fuel cells. Your advantages: no noise, no pollutants, but the same use, speed and range as vehicles with petrol or diesel engines. Hydrogen cars have a range of up to 700 kilometers and refuel in three to five minutes, buses refuel, like conventional buses, in about 15 minutes for a range of about 300 kilometers.

“With the final completion of the H2 filling station, we have come a big step closer to our goal of becoming a hydrogen model region. It is extremely important for us to show that it works: We will soon be producing green hydrogen ourselves and using it in the Düren district and beyond,” said District Administrator Wolfgang Spelthahn.

Responsible for the construction and operation of the hydrogen filling station is Europe’s leading hydrogen filling station operator H2 MOBILITY Deutschland. The filling station technology at the new H2 filling station comes from the industrial gases and technology company Air Liquide. More than 600 kilograms of hydrogen are stored at the station. It can be refueled in two pressure levels, at 700 and 350 bar at a total of 2 filling points.

Lorenz Jung, Management Spokesman for H2 MOBILITY Germany: “The Düren hydrogen filling station is one of the most powerful in the German hydrogen filling station network. We are proud that Rurtalbus and the district of Düren, among others, are using the offer for clean electromobility without restrictions.”

The construction of the hydrogen filling station was funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport with a total of 1.37 million euros as part of the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. The funding guideline is coordinated by NOW GmbH and implemented by the project management agency Jülich (PtJ).

The opening was accompanied by the H2 MOBILITY filling station talk in the Forum Seen&Discovery in the Bismarck district of Düren. Moderated by Johanna Tissot, Wolfgang Spelthahn, District Administrator for the district of Düren, Lorenz Jung, H2 MOBILITY, Sara Schiffer, HyLane and Jens Schmitz, VIAS-Bus/Rurtalbus, among others, exchanged views on previous experiences with filling up with hydrogen and the hydrogen plans of the district of Düren. The H2 MOBILITY filling station talk took place as part of the Germany-wide hydrogen week.

Fuel cell drivers can currently drive cars, smaller commercial vehicles and e.g. B. Refuel garbage collectors. At various stations, buses and trucks can also be refueled at 350 bar.

H2 MOBILITY Germany is expanding the hydrogen filling station infrastructure in a demand-oriented manner in focus regions and along the TEN-T corridors. In addition, existing 700 bar hydrogen filling stations will be expanded at short notice to include a 350 bar option.
