Fuel Cells Works, Hamburg Presents Hydrogen Vision at "Hannover Messe"

Spotlight on twelve key hydrogen projects across metropolitan región.

The Hamburg Metropolitan Region is showcasing itself as a forward-looking centre of green hydrogen at the Hannover Messe (Hanover Fair) which opened its doors Monday, (May 30, 2022) until Friday (June 2, 2022).  The metropolitan region is presenting solutions along the entire value chain at the world’s most important industrial trade fair, which is being held on site for the first time since the pandemic. Delegates can also take part online in exhibitor live streamings, matchmaking and business dating.

The focus of attention in Hall 13 (Stand D58) is on twelve hydrogen projects in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region that have been selected as so-called Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI Hydrogen) for extensive funding from the European Union. These include high-performance networks in various sectors such as the Green Hydrogen Hub Hamburg, the aviation project “Wiplin” and the infrastructure project “HH-Win” in the Port of Hamburg.

Interactive touch table making green hydrogen region tangible

The visual centre of Hamburg’s trade fair booth is an interactive touch table. This brand new device allows Hamburg to highlight the benefits of the metropolitan region and provide background information on key projects and stakeholders in the city. Insights into hydrogen developments across numerous industry clusters such as aviation, the maritime industry and logistics are given. “This year, we have made the conscious decision to participate in the trade fair’s newly created ‘Hydrogen Hall’  to bring both Hamburg and northern Germany as a whole closer to the international industry – as a pioneering region of green hydrogen,” said Dr Rolf Strittmatter, Managing Director of Hamburg Invest, who together with his team is responsible for the trade fair presentation.

Hamburg is already one of Europe’s leading hydrogen regions given the entire range of uses starting with production, electrolysis and industrial use, through the development of a network infrastructure and hydrogen imports to the sustainable mobility of ships, aircraft and commercial vehicles. The region also scores points as a key hub of import logistics and because a hydrogen sector of short distances is being established.

Hamburg setting standards for traffic applications

The north will set standards in the climate-friendly conversion of industry with wind power and hydrogen in future, according to Michael Westhagemann, Senator for Economics and Innovation, adding: “The first important steps have been taken with the implementation of the North German and the National Hydrogen Strategy. Now we need a rapid market ramp-up and a scaling-up of applications.”

An OECD study has hailed northern Germany as particularly suitable for a green hydrogen sector. The region has unique locational advantages for producing renewable energies and huge potential for purchasing hydrogen, especially from local industrial companies. The region is well-positioned thanks to the North German Hydrogen Strategy and plays a vital role in achieving climate protection goals and a successful energy transition in Germany.
