HANOI, Vietnam — Honeywell has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with The Green Solutions Group Corporation (TGS) for the Tra Vinh Green Hydrogen project, Vietnam ‘s first green hydrogen plant, located in the Mekong region Delta.

Honeywell will supply a number of off-the-shelf technologies for this project, such as automation design and management and energy transition management, including battery energy storage systems ( BESS). Through this technology, TGS will be able to integrate renewable energy sources to become part of an environmentally friendly hydrogen factory.

Witnessed by the Prime Minister of Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh , the signing of this MoU took place in November 2023 at the COP28 United Nations Climate Change Conference, Dubai , United Arab Emirates.

“Honeywell BESS will play an important role in supporting the Tra Vinh Green Hydrogen project,” said Ramanathan Valliyappan , Regional General Manager , Honeywell Process Solutions. “This system will expand the renewable energy capacity of the TGS solar power plant (PLTS) after sunset, as well as the capacity of the wind power plant (PLTB) when wind resources subside. Honeywell’s BESS platform helps save costs and reduce carbon emissions by providing transmission system stability electricity from renewable energy sources. Thus, environmentally friendly hydrogen can be produced at the Tra Vinh plant .”

In addition to BESS, Honeywell will provide complete solutions and expertise covering the entire hydrogen industry value chain so that TGS can operate safely, profitably and meet sustainable energy production targets.

“This collaboration represents an important step in the production of environmentally friendly hydrogen at the Tra Vinh plant ,” said Huynh Thi Kim Quyen , Managing Director , TGS. “The Tra Vinh Green Hydrogen project is a major achievement for our company and an important development in achieving national targets, namely decarbonizing the energy sector with renewable energy solutions, and contributing to realizing a cleaner and more sustainable future.”

Vietnam is determined to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. According to a number of projections, Vietnam is one of the five countries most affected by climate change, and faces potentially severe social and economic risks. [i]  Vietnam has great potential in terms of solar and wind power resources, especially the Mekong Delta region where the Tra Vinh factory is located .

Honeywell is committed to achieving carbon neutrality in operational activities and company facilities by 2035. This commitment continues the innovation that has been present for decades so that Honeywell clients can meet environmental and social targets. Approximately 60% of Honeywell’s new product research and development investments in 2022 are allocated to ESG performance for clients. [ii]
