hy2gen secures partnership for a 200 mw renewable ammonia production plant in campeche

In a significant stride toward decarbonizing industry and transport sectors, global renewable hydrogen producer, Hy2gen, has inked a cooperation agreement for a 200 MW renewable ammonia production plant in Campeche, Mexico. The project, dubbed MARENGO, is set to initially produce 180,000 tonnes per year of renewable ammonia for customers in the European Union.

The agreement was signed by Layda Elena Sansores, Governor of Campeche, Angélica Lara Pérez Ríos of regional authority La Semabicce, Wolfgang Dold, German Ambassador to Mexico, Marco Hüls representing GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), Cyril Dufau-Sansot, CEO of Hy2gen AG, and local project development partners.

Thanks to the ideal conditions of constant wind and abundant sunshine at the site location, MARENGO’s electricity needs will be powered by a 415 MW wind farm and a 230 MW solar farm. Cyril Dufau-Sansot, CEO of Hy2gen, hails MARENGO as a crucial contributor to the production of renewable ammonia for the EU.

After signing the cooperation agreement, the partners will undertake feasibility and FEED studies, expected to span 24 to 36 months. This phase will yield crucial construction data and insights on the operation of the production plant. The construction phase will then commence, with production anticipated to start by the third quarter of 2028. This Mexico-based project boosts Hy2gen’s global footprint and brings it closer to its aspiration of becoming the world leader in the production of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs).
