Hydrogen UK’s new report shows that UK’s energy security and decarbonization rely on accelerating hydrogen network deployment. The report highlights the importance of a robust hydrogen economy to meet net zero targets and ensure energy security.
Hydrogen UK and its members make five recommendations for accelerating hydrogen networks:
- Implement interim measures before designing transport business models for easier design and planning
- Develop models for the Regulated Asset Base during both growth and steady-state stages
- Form a strategic planning body for easier coordination of storage and network projects
- Secure political commitment to building a nationwide system of pipelines that only transport 100% hydrogen
- Implement a national industrial decarbonization policy
The UK aims to produce 10GW of hydrogen by 2030, making it a significant part of the future energy mix. Hydrogen networks are essential to achieve this goal, decarbonize energy and utilize hydrogen’s potential in decarbonizing challenging industries. Existing gas networks can carry hydrogen through new pipelines or repurposed ones.
