The Peruvian government, in collaboration with South Africa’s Phelan Green Energy, has commenced the construction of a green hydrogen production facility in Arequipa. This initiative, announced by Presidential Office spokesman Fredy Hinojosa Angulo, represents a substantial investment exceeding $2.5 billion.

The announcement was made following a meeting between President Dina Boluarte and Arequipa’s regional governor, Rohel Sánchez. The plant, which marks the first of its kind in Peru, will be strategically located in the district of La Joya. Spanning over 4,000 hectares, the site also benefits from proximity to the Interoceanic Road, enhancing its logistical capabilities.

Spokesman Fredy Hinojosa Angulo told a press conference in Lima yesterday: “We can now announce to the citizens of Arequipa, in particular, the beginning of the construction of a green hydrogen production plant, a very important project with an investment of over $2.5bn,”

The project is set to generate approximately 2,600 jobs, significantly impacting not only Arequipa but also the broader southern regions of the country. The initiative is aligned with the government’s commitment to transitioning from fossil fuels and transforming the national energy matrix, ultimately aiming to improve the environmental sustainability and quality of life for the local population.

Governor Sánchez highlighted the project’s potential to revolutionize the local economy and energy sector. The plant is expected to play a pivotal role in reducing the region’s reliance on oil and other fossil fuels, thereby contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future for Peru.
