  • Gebrüder Weiss draws a positive balance after one year / 70,000 kilometers without CO2 emissions / planned use of further hydrogen trucks in Austria and Germany

Altenrhein / Lauterach–After a year, the transport and logistics service provider Gebrüder Weiss gives the first hydrogen truck in its vehicle fleet a good interim report.

The Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell stationed in Altenrhein (Switzerland) is used daily in local general cargo transport and has proven itself there in every season. Even on inclines, the electric motor, which draws its power from a fuel cell, maintained its full power. Around 80 tons of CO 2 emissions are saved each year with commercial vehicles.

Since taking delivery of the 36-ton truck in January 2021, the vehicle has covered around 70,000 kilometers. The consumption was even below the value specified by the manufacturer. In one year there was only one visit to the workshop for the technical check. “The purchase was a worthwhile investment in resource-saving road transport. The truck has been well received by the drivers and, above all, by the customers,” sums up Peter Waldenberger, Head of Quality and Environmental Management at Gebrüder Weiss.

Gebrüder Weiss plans to use hydrogen trucks in Austria and southern Germany in the future. Funding programs in Germany make deployments north of the Alps attractive. The only limit is the availability of hydrogen filling stations, of which there are already nine in Switzerland. In addition to the fuel cell truck, the logistics company already has several gas trucks in Austria, Germany and Serbia, as well as electrically powered trucks and vans in the greater Vienna area – including for the customer IKEA in the home delivery sector.
