Fuel Cells Works, Lexus Unveils Recreational Vehicle Concept ATV Powered by Hydrogen
  • Luxurious lifestyle mobile for fun off the beaten track.
  • Bold design paired with outstanding craftsmanship.
  • 1.0-liter hydrogen engine for almost emission-free operation.

Driving fun and environmental awareness are not mutually exclusive. Lexus proves this with its latest concept vehicle, a hydrogen-powered and at the same time extremely off-road buggy, the so-called ROV Concept (ROV = Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle).

The ROV Concept cuts a fine figure in all environments. With its open suspension, a protective cage and robust off-road tires for muddy slopes, the vehicle has all the characteristics of an off-road vehicle. It has compact dimensions of 3,120 x 1,725 x 1,800 millimeters (length x width x height).

With a focus on the Lexus philosophy of putting the driver first, the developers wanted to create a vehicle that you would expect from a premium manufacturer. The body protects the occupants, integrates the characteristic Lexus grille and offers enough spring travel for the front suspension. The front fenders are designed to protect against flying stones and mud.

The suspension cover is connected to the hydrogen tank in the rear. It protects the components and conveys the feeling of resilience that is known from Lexus SUVs. The current Lexus design language is reflected in the front and rear lights with the Lexus L motif and the brand emblem on the rear. The simple display in the interior shows all essential information without distracting the driver.

Lexus quality and craftsmanship

The concept vehicle impresses both inside and out with its exceptional workmanship; the luxurious character of Lexus craftsmanship is unique for a recreational vehicle. The particularly high-quality details include a leather steering wheel and an ergonomically shaped gear knob, as well as seats with synthetic leather covers and spring elements that compensate for unevenness. For demanding off-road use, the first hydrogen drive from Lexus meets all requirements in terms of noise, durability and reliability.

Clean hydrogen propulsion

Lexus combines CO2 neutrality with driving pleasure. The hydrogen-powered ROV Concept has a 1.0-liter hydrogen engine that works like a conventional internal combustion engine with direct injection, but is coupled with a high-pressure tank for compressed hydrogen. It works almost emission-free and only uses a small amount of engine oil while driving. In addition, it impresses with an impressive sound and powerful power delivery, which is made possible by the high combustion speed of hydrogen.

Developed according to the “Lexus Driving Signature”

Thanks to the light body made of a stable tubular frame and the off-road suspension with large spring deflection, the ROV Concept offers natural driving behavior in accordance with the unmistakable “Lexus Driving Signature” and offers its occupants the opportunity to go wherever they want.

“The ROV Concept is our answer to the growing passion for nature and our customers’ thirst for adventure,” says Spiros Fotinos, CEO of Lexus Europe. “The concept vehicle combines our desire to develop lifestyle-oriented products and at the same time to use our innovative technologies to go one step further towards CO2 neutrality. Not only is it exciting to drive, but thanks to its hydrogen engine it also enables virtually emission-free operation. “
