A public consultation is being held over a £6 million project run by The James Hutton Institute to convert its research farm at Glensaugh, near Fettercairn, into a green hydrogen-powered demonstration farm.

the proposed HydroGlen project is setting the stage to showcase how rural and farming communities can transition from reliance on fossil fuels to complete self-sufficiency in green hydrogen and renewable energy. This vision is to meet all energy needs of the farm and surrounding homes at Glensaugh, near Fettercairn.

The community members living near Glensaugh, along with other stakeholders and interested individuals, are invited to learn more about this vision and contribute their opinions. A consultation event is scheduled for September 4 at the Dickson Memorial Hall, Station Road, Laurencekirk.

The James Hutton Institute, a world-leading scientific research organization at the forefront of global challenges such as food, energy, and water sustainability, is steering this £6 million project. It aims to convert its research farm at Glensaugh into a green hydrogen-powered demonstration farm. The project’s funding comes from the Scottish Government’s Just Transition Fund.

The proposed plan for HydroGlen consists of installing a single wind turbine ranging from 500-800 kW, a 0.25 ha solar array at ground and/or roof level, and a green hydrogen production facility. Together, these elements paint a compelling picture of a sustainable agricultural future.

The consultation event, an open-door, drop-in gathering, will run from 2-7 pm and will feature detailed information and displays about the project. Members of the HydroGlen team will be available to answer questions and engage with attendees.

Those interested in commenting on the project can do so either at the event or afterward via email at [email protected] or in writing to the James Hutton Institute, by no later than September 18.
