The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released a new report titled “Towards Hydrogen Definitions Based on their Emissions Intensity,” aimed at informing policymakers, hydrogen producers, investors, and researchers ahead of the G7 Climate, Energy and Environmental Ministerial meeting in April 2023.

This report expands on the IEA’s “Net Zero by 2050: A Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector” and is part of a series addressing sector-specific details of the roadmap.

The report highlights the importance of creating a cohesive, global understanding of hydrogen emissions intensity. This understanding is crucial for informing policymakers, hydrogen producers, investors, and researchers, as they navigate the transition to clean energy sources.

The report assesses the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity of different hydrogen production routes, aiming to establish a standardized emissions accounting framework. This shift away from the current use of color-based terminology or other impractical terms is expected to provide transparency and facilitate international hydrogen supply chain development.

In this context, the report emphasizes the need for a globally agreed-upon framework for emissions accounting. By adopting such a framework, market fragmentation can be reduced and interoperability can be increased, ultimately enabling more effective investments in international hydrogen supply chains.
