ROORKEE—Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, recently inaugurated two state-of-the-art laboratories at the Department of Hydro and Renewable Energy (HRED) – the Renewable Grid Integration Laboratory and the Green Hydrogen Laboratory.
These labs were developed to ensure IIT Roorkee remains at the forefront of India’s clean energy transition, focusing on a reliable, resilient, and self-reliant grid system.
During the visit, Prof. Pant explored various HRED labs dedicated to transformative research in renewable energy fields such as hydropower, energy storage, solar energy, biomass energy, water body management, and energy systems modeling. Professors Arun Kumar and Sunil Singhal showcased the labs and engaged in discussions with Prof. Pant and Deputy Director Prof. UP Singh.
Speaking to faculty and students, Prof. Pant emphasized the importance of reducing carbon emissions and increasing renewable energy usage, with the goal of making India a global leader in green hydrogen production and export. He noted that achieving net-zero carbon targets requires electric grid decarbonization and the development of resilient renewable energy-based power systems.
Prof. Mukesh Singhal, Head of HRED, expressed the department’s commitment to conducting sustainable research and development across renewable energy sectors, with the new labs enhancing their capabilities. Prof. Himanshu Jain and Prof. Amit Bhosale, faculty in charge of the Renewable Grid Integration Laboratory and Green Hydrogen Laboratory, respectively, shared details about the labs’ objectives, capabilities, and research pursuits in line with India’s National Hydrogen Mission.
Established in 1982, the Department of Hydro and Renewable Energy at IIT Roorkee is set to celebrate its Ruby Jubilee. Its vision is to harness the country’s abundant renewable energy potential by advancing expertise and power generation capacity through research and development in hydropower and other renewable energy sources.
