Indian Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri R. K. Singh, convened a crucial meeting with stakeholders in the iron and steel industry to explore the implementation of pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The meeting, held in New Delhi on January 24, 2024, saw participation from officials of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Ministry of Steel, and representatives from the iron and steel sector.

Emphasizing the government’s commitment to an energy transition, Minister Singh highlighted the significance of green hydrogen in reducing the carbon footprint of steel production. He pointed out that adopting green hydrogen not only aids in decarbonization but also enhances the competitiveness of the sector amid rising global trade barriers. The minister acknowledged ongoing industry trials using green hydrogen and stressed the need for transparent selection processes to address technological gaps.

The meeting discussed industry concerns regarding trial challenges and the feasibility of consortium-led projects. Minister Singh assured the attendees of the government’s readiness to allocate additional funds, supplementing the existing allocation of Rs. 455 Crores under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, if required. This move signals a robust push towards identifying effective technologies and strategies for the steel sector’s decarbonization, positioning India at the forefront of sustainable industrial practices.
