The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) has announced the finalization of a decree allocating €700 million for strengthening the regional railway fleet. This funding is dedicated to the acquisition of trains powered either by electricity or hydrogen, marking a significant step in modernizing Italy’s transport infrastructure.

Out of the total allocation, €139.3 million is specifically set aside for the purchase of 11 hydrogen-powered trains. The distribution includes two trains for Campania at a cost of €27.4 million, seven trains for Lombardy at €84.5 million, and two trains for Puglia at €27.4 million.

Additionally, €525 million is allocated for both electric and hydrogen-powered trains to upgrade the rolling stock for the regional public railway service. This allocation is evenly split, with €262.5 million going to the South for 32 trains and an equal amount to the Centre-North for 28 trains.

In detail, Southern Italy will see investments such as six trains for Abruzzo valued at €37.19 million, two trains for Basilicata at €18 million, and four trains for Sicily costing €40 million, among others. For the Centre-North, the funding includes two trains for Emilia-Romagna at €12 million, three trains for Lazio at €34 million, and two trains for the autonomous province of Bolzano at €21.7 million, among various others.

An additional €35.7 million is designated for electrically powered rolling stock for the railway line connecting Domodossola to the Swiss border.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, expressed great satisfaction with the initiative: “We confirm the determination to modernize the country, with choices that respect the environment without ideological forcing and with common sense.” This investment underscores Italy’s commitment to enhancing its regional transport networks while advancing its environmental goals.
