Fuel Cells Works, Italy’s Umbria Region Provides 14M Euros for Hydrogen Production

The regional council of Umbria, Italy, has designated 14 million euros to build renewable hydrogen production facilities in defunct industrial regions. According to Michele Fioroni, regional councilor for economic development, this is part of the “green revolution and ecological transition” mission within the Recovery and Resilience Plan, which aims to support companies and territories in the transition to clean energy. Umbria is one of the five Italian regions that has designated hydrogen generation as a flagship project, and as a result, will receive at least 10 million more than the 14 million euros set aside for the call.

The call, which will be posted on January 18 and run from January 24 to February 28, is open to all business types, regardless of size, that want to establish hydrogen production facilities in defunct industrial regions, either individually or collectively through a network or other agreement involving up to five subjects. The construction of one or more electrolyzers for renewable hydrogen generation and associated support systems for the production process, as well as the development of additional systems served by electrolyzers, will be the main components of the interventions. The electrolyzers must have a total nominal power between 1 MW and 10 MW.

The selection process will prioritize the relationship between the contribution requested and the estimated amount of renewable hydrogen produced at full capacity. As a result, the most effective technologies will be improved, and the location of the site will also be improved in relation to industrial complexes and other users that may have a need for hydrogen. The ranking of proposals will be revealed by March 31, 2023. The regional council chose to operate the call in a “decentralized” manner, with the ministry providing the necessary facilitation to the call’s beneficiaries.
