Fuel Cells Works, Japan Is Building a Network of Ports to Receive Hydrogen Tankers

The Japanese government has begun developing port terminals capable of handling large vessels carrying liquid hydrogen. Yomiuri Shimbun. Infrastructure construction has begun to ensure the continuous supply of a resource that, according to the Japanese authorities, can become the “fuel of the next generation.”

The Cabinet of Ministers of Japan aims to achieve “carbon neutrality” (that is, zero carbon dioxide emissions) by 2050, and by 2030 – to reduce emissions by 46% compared to 2013. Hydrogen does not emit greenhouse gases when burned, 2 million tons of liquid hydrogen are used annually for industrial purposes in Japan, in 2050 the country expects to use up to 20 million tons annually.

One of the objectives of updating the port network to receive tankers with hydrogen is to reduce the cost of the resource. Now, according to the Japan Natural Resources and Energy Agency, a cubic meter of liquid hydrogen costs 170 yen (76 rubles). By 2030, the government expects to reduce the cost of energy to 30 yen, more than 80%. The most modern hydrogen port in Japan at the moment is the port of Kobe, which has an onshore tank capacity of up to 2,500 cubic meters. m resource.

In Russia, against the backdrop of the start of a military operation in Ukraine, there is a deterioration in forecasts for the export of hydrogen. Due to sanctions, the country has been cut off from the largest buyers of “green” and “blue” hydrogen, as a result of which actual exports by 2030 may decrease from 2.2 million to 1.4 million tons per year by 2030.

About the situation with hydrogen in Russia – in the material “Kommersant” “Hydrogen is not the same.”
