Lake Constance region is to become a model region for hydrogen in Germany: The cities of Friedrichshafen and Konstanz, together with ten other project partners, have submitted an application for the “HyExperts” program to the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.

The Lake Constance region is applying for the project “HySEE” (Hydrogen for Sector Integration and Enabling the Energy Transition) to become one of five model regions for hydrogen in Germany. “Our region has the best conditions for the development of a hydrogen value chain,” said Mayor Andreas Brand, Friedrichshafen, and Uli Burchardt, Constance. “Mobility history was and will be written here, a hundred years ago, today and in the future.”

Friedrichshafen and Constance, with a combined population of about 147,000, are centrally located in the four-country region of Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. The region is characterized by internationally operating companies and facilities, innovative technology and forward-looking technologies. Hydrogen can be used in many different applications around Lake Constance, the project partners are sure.

HySee PartnershipApplicants for the project “HySEE” include the city of Friedrichshafen and the city of Konstanz, the initiators Rolls-Royce Power Systems, IWT Institute for Further Education, Knowledge and Technology Transfer and the International Solar Energy Research Center Konstanz e. V with the initiative SolarLAGO. In addition, the project partners HTWG Konstanz University of Applied Sciences – Technology, Economics and Design, Airbus Defense and Space GmbH, Diehl Aerospace GmbH, waste disposal services City Konstanz, Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg GmbH, Oxygen Plant Friedrichshafen GmbH, Stadtwerke Konstanz GmbH, STADTWERK AM SEE GmbH & Co. KG and ZF Friedrichshafen AG participated in the project “HySEE”. The ClusterAgency Baden-Württemberg also supports the project.

The industrial and municipal project partners provide mobility on water, on land and in the air, for which the use of hydrogen is suitable: in traffic, in public local and long-distance traffic, in shipping and in aviation from the “Bodensee-Airport “Or even in space can be used hydrogen. Use by the utility is also conceivable. The universities and research institutes in the region are also very interested in providing scientific support for the technological and economic debate on hydrogen.

The application for the “HyExperts” program at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure was signed by Mayor Andreas Brand a few days ago. Accordingly, the Mayor of Constance, Uli Burchardt said “The commitment of the partners to the development of a hydrogen infrastructure testifies to forward-thinking. The potential of hydrogen, its generation, storage, distribution, and use was recognized by the partners – because hydrogen technologies are an important building block for climate neutrality and climate protection. Climate and mobility are not contradictory with hydrogen but in harmony “, emphasizes Burchardt. The decision on funding is expected at the end of 2019 / beginning of 2020.
