Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (“Mitsui”, Head office: Tokyo, President and CEO: Tatsuo Yasunaga), has acquired an 11.64% stake in a German on-demand ridesharing service, GHT Mobility GmbH (brand name: “CleverShuttle”), whose lead investor is Deutsche Bahn.

As one of the world’s mobility leaders, Germany is seeing progress in the diversification of its modes of transportation, particularly in the capital city of Berlin, though since the country is still a major user of cars, the national and local governments are promoting the use of public transportation, as well as its electrification and digitalization, as a way to help protect the environment and reduce traffic congestion. Deutsche Bahn, which carries the largest number of passengers in all of Europe, is positioned as an important player with a large impact on environmental and transportation policies and is pursuing the development of highly convenient and sustainable mobility services utilizing its nationwide rail network and mobility operator investments.

CleverShuttle is a ride-pooling service that sends cars on demand using a smartphone app and transports multiple passengers to their each destination. Currently, it operates services across five cities in Germany and meets the needs of about 210,000 users every month as a means of first and last-mile connectivity between inner-city points. Additionally, by using EVs and FCEVs (electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles) with low environmental impact, and working to coexist with other public transportation such as rail, the company contributes to solutions for social issues such as environmental pollution, traffic congestion, and increased mobility demand in cities. Utilizing its cumulative knowledge in the automobile and railway fields, Mitsui will support the promotion of seamless transportation and the enhancement of CleverShuttle’s business value.

In its Medium-term Management Plan, Mitsui has positioned Mobility as one of its new growth areas and is working to address diversifying lifestyle needs and environmental challenges through the development of new businesses and business models around the world.
