Morocco’s OCP Group, a global leader in the phosphate industry, is channeling $7 billion into a green hydrogen-based ammonia production facility. This strategic investment is aimed at reducing the company’s carbon footprint while keeping pace with the growing global demand for greener industrial practices.
The OCP Group’s new investment will be used to construct and operate a state-of-the-art ammonia factory fueled by green hydrogen, a clean energy source. The move aligns with international efforts to transition towards low-carbon economies and supports Morocco’s national strategy for sustainable development.
The new plant will be one of the largest green ammonia factories worldwide, with an anticipated production capacity of over one million tons annually. It will produce green ammonia, a versatile chemical that serves as a crucial component in the production of fertilizers and can be used as a medium for hydrogen energy storage and transport.
“This investment is a significant step towards our commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly operations,” said Mostafa Terrab, OCP Group’s CEO. “It aligns with our strategy to become a key player in the global green hydrogen economy, thereby supporting global food security through sustainable agricultural practices.”
OCP’s new plant, expected to start operations in 2026, will use electrolyzers to produce green hydrogen from water using renewable electricity. This process significantly reduces the carbon emissions associated with traditional hydrogen production methods.
The OCP Group’s investment also stands to enhance Morocco’s position as a key player in the renewable energy sector, contributing to the country’s efforts towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly economy.
