Moroccan firms Neo Motors and NamX revealed the first model and prototype of their domestically designed vehicles on Monday.

King Mohammed VI of Morocco presided over a ceremony celebrating national innovation and sustainability, unveiling the nation’s first indigenous car brand and a hydrogen-powered vehicle prototype.

This milestone, featuring New Motors’ locally produced car and NamX’s Hydrogen Utility Vehicle (HUV) prototype, not only boosts Morocco’s standing in car production but also highlights the King’s commitment to entrepreneurial endeavors and green energy, especially in the area of green hydrogen.

New Motors, a company based on Moroccan capital, has set up an industrial plant in Ain Aouda, in the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region, for manufacturing cars for both domestic and international markets. With a projected yearly production of 27,000 units and a local integration rate of 65%, the initiative is geared towards stimulating economic growth and job creation. The project, with an investment of approximately $15.6 million (156 million dirhams), is poised to create about 580 jobs.

In February 2023, New Motors’ inaugural vehicle received final approval from the National Agency for Road Safety, marking a significant achievement. The company has since started production and plans to launch the industrial unit in June, initiating marketing efforts. This landmark project, introducing the first public Moroccan car brand, exemplifies the country’s commitment to fostering local talent and expertise, particularly in comprehensive vehicle assembly systems.

In collaboration with the esteemed Italian design firm Pininfarina for exterior design, and with Moroccan talent for interior design, NamX has developed a hydrogen vehicle prototype, the HUV. The vehicle will feature a central hydrogen tank supplemented by six removable capsules, enabling a significant battery capacity and facilitating quick hydrogen refueling within minutes. This innovative project places Morocco at the cutting edge of global efforts to develop efficient and eco-friendly transportation.

In recognition of their intellectual prowess and trailblazing contributions, King Mohammed VI awarded Nasim Belkhayat, the founder and managing director of New Motors, and Fawzi Najah, the founder and managing director of NamX, with the Medal of Intellectual Competence. Their visionary leadership and dedication to advancing automotive innovation in Morocco has garnered significant recognition.
