Next step in making regional mobility more sustainable.

ALKMAAR – The hydrogen tank installation of the NXT Energy Hub on the De Boekelermeer business park in Alkmaar was officially opened to the public on Friday, January 19, 2024, after an extensive pilot phase, by Alkmaar Alderman Peetoom and Deputy Olthof of the province of North Holland.

This makes the first hydrogen filling station in the Alkmaar region a fact. All hydrogen vehicles, including trucks and buses (350 bar) and passenger cars (700 bar), can refuel with hydrogen at the station.

The opening of the first hydrogen filling station is an important milestone for NXT Mobility, which is part of the GP Groot group . Erik Metselaar, director of NXT Mobility: “Although there are currently more than 4,100 filling stations in the Netherlands, the number of places where hydrogen can be refueled is still very limited. The realization of this hydrogen location is therefore an important step, not only for NXT Mobility, but also for our region. At the NXT Energy Hub in Alkmaar we offer a unique combination of energy products for sustainable mobility: hydrogen, sustainable diesel, LNG, and soon also ultra-fast charging points for electric passenger cars and trucks.”

Incentive for sustainable mobility in Alkmaar

Christiaan Peetoom, mobility councilor for the municipality of Alkmaar, emphasizes the local impact: “I am proud that the first hydrogen filling station in our region is on the Boekelermeer. This new gas station is an important and innovative development of sustainable mobility. Partly due to this initiative, driving on hydrogen in and around Alkmaar has become a realistic option. The fact that GP Groot itself also uses five hydrogen vehicles shows that it is possible and I hope that others will follow this example.”

Hydrogen produced regionally with wind energy

The hydrogen filling station in Alkmaar is part of the Duwaal project. This project focuses on the development of a green hydrogen economy in North Holland. The goal is to set up a chain of hydrogen production, distribution and use. The production of hydrogen from wind energy by Hygro, based in Alkmaar and Wieringerwerf, plays an important role in this. As soon as the regionally produced hydrogen from wind is available, it will be offered at the NXT Energy Hub in Alkmaar.

North Holland pioneer in sustainable energy

Jeroen Olthof, deputy of the province of North Holland, sees this as a crucial development: “The opening of this hydrogen filling station in Alkmaar is a tangible step in realizing the Duwaal project in which wind energy is converted into green hydrogen. It is important for our region and underlines that North Holland is at the forefront of the transition to sustainable energy. By promoting regional production and use of green hydrogen, we open new opportunities for clean mobility and contribute to a more sustainable future. It is good to see that private companies, such as GP Groot group, to which NXT Mobility belongs, are also taking steps in this regard.”

The new hydrogen tank installation built by the Dutch manufacturer Resato was made possible in part by a contribution in the context of the DKTI transport subsidy from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
