NTPC Launches Indias First Hydrogen Bus Trial in Leh e1692376792971

In a landmark move towards achieving carbon-neutral Ladakh, state-owned power giant NTPC has commenced the trial run of a hydrogen bus in Leh. This monumental effort exemplifies NTPC’s robust commitment to embracing 60 GW of Renewable Energy capacity by 2032, along with becoming a leading force in green hydrogen technology and energy storage.

According to a company statement, NTPC is in the process of establishing a hydrogen fuelling station, complemented by a solar plant, and provision of five fuel cell buses for operation within Leh’s intracity routes.

The first hydrogen bus, arriving in Leh on August 17, initiated a three-month-long journey involving field trials, roadworthiness tests, and adherence to various statutory protocols. This venture stands as India’s inaugural deployment of hydrogen buses on public roads, a claim noted by the company.

Co-located with a dedicated 1.7 MW solar plant that ensures renewable power, the Green Hydrogen Mobility Project at an altitude of 11,562 ft is a pioneering endeavor. The fuel cell buses are crafted to function in sub-zero temperatures and rarefied atmospheres, an exclusive feature typical of high-altitude locations, making this project a unique one.

NTPC’s ambition extends far beyond hydrogen-powered transportation. Aiming to reach 60 GW of Renewable Energy capacity by the year 2032, NTPC is strategically positioning itself as a vital player in the green hydrogen and energy storage sectors.

Alongside the hydrogen bus project, the company is engaging in various initiatives for decarbonization, including hydrogen blending, carbon capture, electric vehicle buses, and the development of smart NTPC Townships.

This hydrogen bus trial signifies a significant step in India’s green mobility and clean energy sector. As NTPC leads the way in pioneering hydrogen-powered transportation, the potential for a greener and more sustainable future comes to the fore, placing hydrogen at the center of a renewable energy revolution in the country.
