The Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC) has focused its efforts on accelerating hydrogen innovation by supporting two hydrogen-focused start-ups in its 2024 TechX Clean Energy Accelerator. This initiative, now in its sixth year, aims to propel advancements in low-carbon hydrogen production and utilization, highlighting the critical role of hydrogen in the transition to a net-zero future.

These hydrogen-centric start-ups, part of a cohort of 12, are set to receive up to £100,000 in funding, along with access to an extensive network of mentors, investors, and sponsors such as bp, Equinor, ADNOC, and newly joined ConocoPhillips. The program offers a unique platform for these emerging ventures to refine their business models, improve investor readiness, and gain industry exposure through field trials and NZTC’s support ecosystem.

The selected hydrogen start-ups are:

  • HyWaves: Developing a power management control system aimed at enhancing hydrogen production from dedicated solar-to-hydrogen projects, thereby reducing costs and increasing efficiency.
  • SurreyH2: Innovating in green hydrogen production technology with a recirculating catalyst system that also incorporates intrinsic hydrogen storage capabilities, aiming to lower the cost barriers associated with green hydrogen production.
  • H2CHP: A fuel-flexible power generator designed for port applications, offering full control over the combustion process to achieve high efficiency with zero carbon emissions.
  • INERGIO Technologies: Presenting a novel system that merges the benefits of fuel cells and diesel generators, offering sustainable off-grid and backup power solutions.

After a comprehensive 15-week program that includes business development training and a Demo Day in June 2024 for pitching to potential investors, these start-ups will continue to receive two years of growth support from TechX. This includes ongoing access to NZTC’s resources and co-working spaces.

The success of previous cohorts, with 57 start-ups generating £32M in revenue and creating 443 jobs, underscores the potential impact of the 2024 cohort. Specifically, the hydrogen start-ups are poised to contribute significantly to the decarbonization of the energy sector, aligning with global net-zero targets.

Mark Anderson, Chief Acceleration Officer & TechX Director, emphasized the importance of entrepreneurial innovation in driving the energy transition, noting the potential of this year’s cohort to introduce vital solutions for clean and affordable energy.

The UK and Scottish Governments have also expressed support for the program, recognizing the pivotal role of start-up innovation in addressing environmental challenges and advancing the energy sector towards sustainability. The UK Government’s £90 million investment in NZTC, along with the Scottish Government’s support, reflects a strong commitment to fostering a green, innovative economy centered around hydrogen and other clean technologies.
