Hydrom Initiates Oman’s First Green Hydrogen Projects in Historic Deal.

In a historic move, Hydrogen Oman SPC (Hydrom), a subsidiary of Energy Development Oman SAOC (EDO), has signed three contracts for the commencement of the first green hydrogen initiatives in Oman. This is in line with Oman’s dedication to advancing its hydrogen sector.

These agreements, granting land rights for renewable energy and clean hydrogen projects, were signed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, and Hydrom. The agreements mark a significant step in Oman’s mission to become a global leader in green hydrogen production.

The successful bidders from Denmark, USA, UK, Kuwait, Singapore, and Oman sealed the agreements during a special event held on June 1, 2023. The total investment for the three projects, signed with the consortia of Amnah, Green Energy Oman (GEO), and BP Oman, is projected to surpass $20 billion.

These green hydrogen projects are expected to yield a combined production capacity of half a million tons of green hydrogen annually from over 11.5 GW of renewable energy capacity. The production sites are located in the Al Wusta Governorate and span over an area of 320 km² each.

The agreements signed today signify a major leap forward in Oman’s journey towards a sustainable energy future. This commitment was demonstrated through Oman’s pledge to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050, the national strategy for green hydrogen, and the review of regulatory and legal frameworks for green energy transformation projects. These actions are in line with the strategic goals of Oman Vision 2040.

HE Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al-Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals (MEM) and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hydrom, commented, “With these agreements, Oman is poised to become one of the leading countries in green hydrogen production.”
