Enagás, a prominent energy infrastructure company, has witnessed an exceptional response to its Spanish Hydrogen Troncal Network initiative. The company recently concluded the first phase of its non-binding Call For Interest process, attracting participation from over 200 companies, signifying the immense sector-wide enthusiasm.

This initiative, launched on 14th September, aimed to gauge the energy sector’s interest in developing necessary renewable hydrogen transport infrastructures. It also gathered information on related elements like ammonia, oxygen, and CO2. The process, audited by Bureau Veritas for data confidentiality and traceability, saw its data incorporation phase end on 17th November, though the platform remains open for error corrections till 27th November.

The results of this extensive consultation will inform potential adjustments to the proposed infrastructure, initially presented at the 1st Enagás Hydrogen Day in January 2023. The Spanish Hydrogen Troncal Network is poised to be a cornerstone in connecting supply with demand, enhancing Spanish industry competitiveness, and supporting decarbonization. Additionally, it will connect Iberian Peninsula production centers with the H2Med corridor, pivotal in transforming Spain into Europe’s foremost hydrogen hub.

Enagás CEO Arturo Gonzalo, speaking at the European Hydrogen Week in Brussels, highlighted the importance of a European framework to map hydrogen supply and demand, along with firm capacity commitments. He spotlighted the H2Med project’s role in creating hydrogen corridors, linking Portugal and Spain, and connecting Barcelona and Marseille via maritime routes. With an investment of about 2.5 billion euros, H2Med epitomizes the commitment to regional hydrogen infrastructure expansion.

Enagás’ Spanish Hydrogen Backbone Network initiative aims to build a comprehensive hydrogen transportation network within Spain for both domestic use and international export. The overwhelming response to the ‘call for interest’ underscores the market’s readiness and eagerness to participate in this hydrogen economy transition.

The European Hydrogen Week serves as a pivotal event, discussing advancements, projects, and investment opportunities in the European hydrogen sphere. As part of Europe’s broader decarbonization efforts, hydrogen emerges as a key alternative energy source, particularly in sectors crucial for decarbonization like transportation and industry.
