PACE Report: New Generation of Fuel Cell micro-Cogeneration Units on the Market with Higher Performance for Greater Customer Benefit

European fuel cell micro-cogeneration manufacturers, supported by research centres, have invested considerable resources and effort over the past few years to improve the technology.

Following this, a new generation of fuel cell micro-cogeneration units has now been launched with higher efficiencies. The sector has managed to push overall efficiency above 90%. Furthermore, the new unit design allows units to be swiftly installed and more easily integrated into existing heating systems such as radiators. Thanks to digitalisation, households and businesses can operate their unit more easily and adapt it to their exact energy needs.

All these improvements will make it possible for end-users to generate their own electricity and heat in an affordable and reliable way while at the same time reducing their carbon footprint. On average, a European household saves 1 tonne of CO2 per year by switching to a fuel cell micro-cogeneration unit. Europe has already more than 10,000 units installed and it is expected that shortly more than 10,000 units will be installed annually in Europe. This would be a reduction of an additional 10,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.

The fuel cell micro-cogeneration manufacturers BDR ThermeaBoschSOLIDpowerSunfire and Viessmann enjoyed a considerable contribution from the PACE project to invest in improving their units.
